Ex-San Diego Basketball Sensation Mikey Williams Hit with Three Additional Felony Charges

Star basketball prospect Mikey Williams from Memphis is facing three additional serious charges related to a shooting incident that occurred on March 27. He has been ordered to appear in court personally for arraignment on a total of nine charges.

Originally, Williams was expected to appear for arraignment on Tuesday, but this was conducted via teleconference with his new co-counsel Randy Grossman. Judge Kathleen M. Lewis expressed surprise that the appearance was not in person. It was explained that Williams' other attorney, Troy Owens, was preoccupied with a murder case and requested videoconferencing with the district attorney's office rather than the court.

Deputy District Attorney George Modlin preferred an in-person appearance, particularly due to the new charges, and to address Williams' bail status. As a result, Judge Lewis ordered Williams to appear in court on Friday.

In a preliminary hearing held on October 10, Judge Sherry M. Thompson-Taylor ordered Williams to stand trial and denied the prosecution's request to raise his bail to $500,000. Williams had been released on a $50,000 bond since his arrest on April 13.

Williams, who completed his high school career at San Ysidro High School, is accused of being involved in a shooting at his $1.2 million residence in unincorporated Jamul in eastern San Diego County on March 27. The altercation, occurring just before midnight, involved gunshots fired at a departing car with five occupants. Although the car was hit by bullets, none of the occupants were injured.

Initially, Williams faced charges of five counts of assault with a weapon and one count of firing into an occupied vehicle, which could result in a 28-year prison sentence if convicted on all counts. The three new charges each carry an additional eight months in prison.

Testimony during Williams' preliminary hearing revealed that there were six individuals in the car, including an Uber driver, and that Williams had made threats. This led to the prosecution adding an extra count of assault with a weapon and two counts of making threats.

A juvenile witness testified that she and a group of friends had taken an Uber to Williams' residence to meet with JJ Taylor, who was also residing there and committed to playing at Memphis. The girl mentioned that she went inside while the others remained in the car, and Williams became angry and started making threats.

During the preliminary hearing, Judge Thompson-Taylor concluded that although no witnesses saw Williams discharge a firearm, there was probable cause to proceed with the case based on the testimony that witnesses saw him with a gun and heard him threaten to kill them. The prosecution presented photographs of bullet holes in a Tesla Model 3 that transported five people to Williams' residence.

Williams is currently enrolled in online classes at Memphis and remains on the roster, but he does not have access to team facilities or activities. His status with the program will be determined once the court case is resolved.

The Tigers began practice on September 25 and are set to open the season on November 6 at home against Jackson State.

Williams was one of the early stars of the name, image, and likeness era, securing a multiyear deal with Puma in 2021 for an undisclosed amount. He had a substantial following on social media before deactivating his accounts. While On3.com once estimated his NIL value at $3.6 million, Williams' name no longer appears in the rankings.
